Home for Good

“But when will I see you again?” he said as he stood at the top of the stairwell with a tear running down his face. “He” is my nephew Ethan, and that day as I prepared to head back to the airport, his little face showed that he couldn’t understand why Uncle John was leaving. I explained that Alberta was where Uncle John lived, but that he shouldn’t worry because I’d be home again. “Oh,” said little Ethan as he slowly walked back to his room. “Well, can I get a hug before I go?” I asked.Read more

Reversing the Tide

Ah, Calgary. A city always on the move, growing up and out every day. It demands nothing less than everything you have, and in return gives you fantastic monetary rewards. What of balance and being able to truly enjoy life though? As a native born Calgarian, I've seen the city become more and more dynamic, moving faster than ever before and demanding nothing less than the same from its people. For the longest time, I worked to keep up with it, juggling my time between work, volunteering and still more work.Read more

Coming Home

I have dreamed of the day that I hope will come very soon. Born in Liverpool in 1955 I was torn away from my family in 1961, at age 6, and adopted out to the United States. I was not allowed to speak of my brothers, sisters, mother or father, my foster parents, Nova Scotia or Canada. I longed to be home for the next 48 years. Ten years ago a baby sister I didn't know I had found me. She was born when I was 4 in Nova Scotia just as the family broke up and we were separated. Terrie was adopted to a family in Chicago, me to Michigan.Read more

Gifting the Extraordinary

If your life is the sum of your days on earth, then some of those days should be extraordinary. My days have been extraordinary since I moved to Nova Scotia from Toronto when I was 9 years old. My parents were part of the 60's exodus from Cape Breton hoping to find the land of opportunity in the "big city". It was not what they expected so we made the move back to Nova Scotia. I was raised in Digby by two entrepreneurial spirits enjoying a fabulous childhood in small town Nova Scotia.Read more

If Home Is Where Your Heart Is...

I recently submitted this to a regional blog by Kimberly Walsh, called 'East Coast By Choice' (http://eastcoastbychoice.ca), and realized that this same story fit very well with the Nova Scotia Come To Life image. So, I would like to share with the Nova Scotia Come To Life campaign:

A 'Shout Out' for Nova Scotia

I have had the privilege of calling Halifax my home since the age of three and of obtaining my undergraduate and Medical degrees from Dalhousie. I continued my studies at McGill where I was consistently reminded by residents/fellows/faculty how impressed they were not only with the clinical skills of Dalhousie Medical School graduates, but also with their friendly, grounded and professional demeanor. The skills (medical and life) acquired back home laid a solid foundation which enabled me to eventually teach Medicine and to participate in several overseas/domestic projects.Read more

The Steep Hill Journey

I travel a lot with business.

I travel to trade shows in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and at most shows I am able to do an on-stage presentation and chat with consumers at our booth.

I like to talk to people in the crowd about Halifax and Nova Scotia. At each of those show I come across several attendees who are expats from around Nova Scotia.

For them it gives them memories of home and also gives them a sense of pride that a business is leaving the safety of our borders and gaining a foothold in those larger markets.Read more

Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Me Away

Having lived in Nova Scotia all my life, I have to tell you I am very fortunate. Most of my friends and family have left for work over the years, only to return at the first opportunity.    Most people that visit want to move here. People are so friendly; the climate is moderate; there is little crime.  People have good family values. It is a nice place to live and raise a family.Read more

Settling In

My family came to Canada in 1996 when I was doing my Ph.D. at Memorial University in Newfoundland. It was an amazing experience to come from the warm weather in Egypt to Newfoundland but we loved it.  People over there are so friendly.  After I finished my degree in marine engineering we went back to Egypt for almost one year but my kids who started their school in Newfoundland wanted to come back to Canada, so we applied for immigration and came to Nova Scotia in summer 2000. It was hard at the beginning to find a job here for my husband who is a mechanical engineer in Egypt.Read more

We all come back

I left Nova Scotia in 2000 and headed out west, like many other Maritimers. But as they say, you don't know what you've got until it's gone. I always knew I'd come home again. The pull of the Maritimes is a strong one. The whole time I was away I missed family, friends and Nova Scotia. I love this province. It's hard to pinpoint why because there are so many things that make it special; the heritage, the people, the music, the scenery, and the list goes on and on.Read more

A Proud Heritage

Although I have put down roots in Florida, I often make the pilgrimage home to Nova Scotia with my husband of 17 years We are historians and environmental educators, and found that in so many ways, Florida's story is linked to that of Nova Scotia. We travel to Parsborough and Joggins to comb their fossil cliffs for clues to Florida's ancient geology. We make our way to Lunenburg to study shipbuilding history for links to Florida's age of sail. My heritage dates back to 1758, when my Irish ancestor stepped off a ship in Halifax harbor and made his way to the beautiful Annapolis Valley.Read more

Nova Scotia is where I want to be

I was born and raised in Nova Scotia, having lived in Halifax/Dartmouth as well as Lower Sackville.

My father was in the navy, stationed in the Halifax area from 1959-1986, and upon retirement, moved his family to BC. I have been here ever since and I am always longing to return home to live.

I last visited in 2006, and realized that Nova Scotia is where I want to be and I am planning to be in 2012. My wife, who is from BC, fell in love with Nova Scotia, and is always looking at real estate in the province, is too looking forward to our move.Read more

Open to New Ideas

I'm a native Quebecer from Montreal and felt it was time for a change. I moved to Ontario for a few years, then finally took up permanent residence here in Halifax in 2006. I run an I.T. company and have found that doing business in Nova Scotia is great. the people are more inviting and open to new ideas. Business moves at a reasonable pace which makes for a less stressing work environment. I've always loved the hospitality and picturesque scenery when I've visited Nova Scotia in the past. I love being by the ocean and fishing which makes Nova Scotia a great place to do business and play.Read more

We Headed East

My husband and I travelled from BC to NS in June of 2008 after much research on the Internet learning about NS on cold winter days last year in the Okanagan Valley. I read with interest the article from Bruce and Jane Emlyn who very much want to come to NS as we too found the BC life just too stressful and longed for the unpretentious and genuine way of life here in this beautiful province. I was born in BC and my husband is from Devon England.Read more
