The first leg of the Opportunities Nova Scotia national tour took 12 Nova Scotia employers to downtown Toronto and Mississauga on November 5 and 6. More than 600 job seekers attended the two events – many were Nova Scotians looking to come home, and a large portion of the job seekers were newcomers to Canada who were thinking of moving to the province. Nova Scotians attending the events were thrilled to hear about job opportunities, and they shared their stories and reasons for moving back. There was a man whose girlfriend is already working in Halifax and he wants to get there as soon as possible. There was a couple who wanted to move back to Nova Scotia so their kids can live near their grandparents…they were sick of saying goodbye all the time.
One Halifax woman living near Oakville, Ontario said she saw the Opportunities Nova Scotia ad on the bus and read “It’s Time to Come Home.” She yelled out “You’re darn right it is!” to the amusement of others on the bus!
Employers say they have met a lot of people and have made some valuable connections. To date there have been more than 1,000 resumes submitted through the www.opportunitiesns.ca website, as well as in person at the events. In addition to talking about their available positions, employers say they have spent time educating newcomers about Nova Scotia and conveying what it’s like to live and work in the province.
“We’ve seen a lot of qualified people and made a lot of connections. We’ve been promoting Capital Health, as well as the other regional health authorities,” says Darcelle Lewis of the Capital District Health Authority. “We have been providing a lot of information on the province as well as the job opportunities, and have really enjoyed routing qualified candidates to the employers in the group.”
Yesterday we arrived in Ottawa, after flying in at 7:10 a.m. in the morning. We were at the Minto Suite Hotel and saw more than 100 job seekers in the first few hours. Stand by for more details on the success of the Ottawa event.
