Kayla Hoolwerf
Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kayla Hoolwerf moved to Lantz, Nova Scotia at the age of 5. After living here for over 12 years, Nova Scotia is where Kayla calls home. Currently a Grade 12 high school student at Hants East Rural High, Kayla is a dancing enthusiast – participating in jazz, tap, lyrical, ballet, hip hop and contemporary dance classes with locally owned and operated, Dance Zone Performing Arts Centre. In addition to her love of dance, Kayla also has interests in drawing, photography and creating short videos.
It’s her interest in creating short videos, which was inspired by her Grandfather, who has worked in the broadcasting industry for over 30 years that brought Kayla to EastLink TV. With a desire to gain insight and experience in broadcasting and television, Kayla has been volunteering with EastLink TV for over a year. She has been in the role of Camera Operator and Floor Director and currently holds the position of In-Truck Producer of the popular live call-in show, Sportsland. As In-Truck Producer, Kayla “runs the show” for one of EastLink TV’s premier programs - she ensures the hosts are ready to go, the crew is in their positions and that everything stays on time and runs smoothly during the one hour program. Quite a responsibility for a high school student!
That responsibility is one of the reasons Kayla volunteers on Sportsland each Monday night. “I love learning the different roles behind the scenes and learning to overcome the different challenges that are presented with each new show. I especially love knowing that I play an important role in each show no matter how small it may be.”
In the future, Kayla plans to attend university where she will study journalism and/or film with hopes of a career in the broadcasting and film industry. She hasn’t decided yet if she will continue down the path of Producer, as she hasn’t yet decided which she likes more – working behind the scenes or being on camera. But Kayla does know that she enjoys living in Nova Scotia. She particularly likes to see how communities here work together in supporting youth in reaching their goals.....and she loves the ocean :)
