In Woodville, Kings County, “We’re just small enough that neighbours know each other on a first name basis, and just large enough to be a driving force of major activity throughout the year,” says Jack van Roestel, resident.
Woodville is a hamlet of about 80 households nestled at the base of North Mountain in the picturesque Annapolis Valley, about 20 kms northwest of Kentville. On Sunday, July 24, 2011, the Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, will come to Woodville’s annual Garden Party to recognize and celebrate all Woodville has accomplished, including becoming the twelfth community in Nova Scotia since 2008 to be honoured with the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award.
Woodville’s many strengths as a community include its significant and enduring leadership over decades and its amazing spirit – so many people work hard and cooperatively to deepen their bonds and commitment to their community, reaching out to all ages.
Commitment, indeed. In 2010 alone Woodville raised or received funding of just over $100,000 to engage residents particularly through fitness and social activities. Funds were used for things like youth swimming lessons and their 18 kilometres of hiking/biking trails . A memorial to honour the community’s war heroes – both living and fallen. Fitness memberships in the community centre (a resident generously offered commercial gym equipment) that sparked the idea of affordable fitness for all. The highlight of their fundraising efforts is the annual BBQ – where 3,400 half-chickens are roasted during the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival.
