Charles Doucette

stone and bone mask by Charles Doucette

A resident of the Chapel Island Indian Reservation in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Charles works in multiple mediums, including sculpture, painting, goldsmithing, and poetry, although he is primarily known for sculpture. Charles works conceptually, with an idea determining the method and medium of the resulting piece. His work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Mount Saint Vincent University, the Indian Art Centre-Ottawa, and the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park. Some of his works - made in situ, or from rapidly perishable materials - are not saleable. Charles has also worked in a variety of other occupations, including Barge Operator, Game Warden, Marine Construction, Actor and Fishery Guardian.

He is one of seven Mi’kmaq artists selected by the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games for the Aboriginal Art Program, in which art by more than 90 Aboriginal artists from across the country will grace the 2010 Winter Games venues.
