Deanne Fitzpatrick is a prolific rug hooker. She can be found in her studio in downtown Amherst most days. When she is not working on a new creation, she is designing kits and patterns, giving workshops or writing on the art. In viewing her craftsmanship it is hard to believe this passion for rug hooking sprang merely from a practical need to furnish an old farmhouse. But so it began. A flame was ignited when Deanne discovered rug hooking as a means for self-expression and story telling. Diane•s rugs reflect her belief in simplicity, community and tradition.

“I hook nearly everyday. I cannot stop myself. I like the feel of wool slipping through my fingers. I love working alone, though I had no idea that I would. It is a found pleasure. I love land, especially fields. I find that a bunch of scrub and brush is a beautiful thing. It changes all day long with the light. I want to hang onto as simple a life as I possibly can. I do not find that easy because there are so many charms that are like a ruby to a crow, but it is my goal to live simply, and make hooked rugs that are unmistakably art.”

Deanne•s studio is a warm and colourful space filled with rug hooking kits, patterns, hooked rugs, and rug hooking supplies. She uses recycled cloth, gathered from old wool clothing. The clothes are washed, dried and torn apart. It is then hooked loop-by-loop on a backing of burlap or linen into a one-of-a-kind work of fibre art.
