Icewine and Culinary to Tempt Palates at the 2010 Nova Scotia Winter Icewine Festival

Halifax, N.S. – Nova Scotia winemakers and some of the province’s finest chefs come together to celebrate their passion for local food and wine during the third annual Winter Icewine Festival. Organized by the Winery Association of Nova Scotia (WANS), the festival runs from February 4 to 14, 2010.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we have over 40 events this year," says Janice Ruddock, managing director of WANS. "It shows how successful the festival has become…how local businesses support the festival and how Nova Scotians support our local wines."

New for the 2010 festival is the opportunity to win a Nova Scotia Wine Cellar. Comprised of 50 bottles of local wines, anyone who visits a participating winery from February 4 to 14 will have an opportunity to fill out a ballot to win. The draw will take place March 1, 2010 and entrants must be 19 years of age or older.

During the festival, sample Icewine paired with local cuisine, learn how Icewine is made, try pruning in the vineyard or relax for the weekend on a romantic Winter Icewine Experience Getaway. Highlights of the festival include a polar bear dip in the Gaspereau River organized by The Library Pub, Sainte-Famille Wines’ Dessert Wine Festival, Saege Bistro’s Taste of Nova Scotia Gold dinner and Lane’s Privateer Inn’s Icewine and Cool Blues.

About Icewine

Icewine is made from frozen grapes. Usually harvested at night, when the temperature hits between -8 °C and -10 °C, the grapes are pressed while frozen and only the juice is used in fermentation. For grape growers, Icewine grapes can be a challenge, but Nova Scotia provides ideal temperatures for growing. The province produces Icewines that consistently win national and international awards.
