Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia

The Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia works to make the most of the strengths and assets of Nova Scotia's coastal and rural communities. Formed in the '90s as a partnership between the Coastal Communities Network and Literacy Nova Scotia, the Rural Communities Foundation received its charitable status in 2002.

It is governed by a volunteer board of directors from communities throughout the province. The group pools charitable gifts from many donors into long-term endowments and makes funds available to community groups as grants ranging from $500 to $5000. Since 2004, the foundation has awarded about $10,000 a year to various causes including literacy and affordable housing. An example of its work is the establishment of a Shelburne Radio station. Through this creative approach that capitalizes on the strength, support and resourcefulness of Nova Scotia communities, the Rural Communities Foundation is taking a leadership role in bringing Nova Scotians together.
