Dawn and her husband moved their family to Nova Scotia in 2004 and haven’t looked back. Dawn has found some pretty amazing and supportive people here that in her confidence to start her passion and dream of The Naughty Cookie Co. Dawn started taking part-time distance classes towards her Degree in Business at MSVU in 2005. In 2008, with the support of family, friends and one of her MSVU professors, this mother of four, confidently launched 3 of her flavours in March 2008 as a small home-based business she calls The Naughty Cookie Co.
Dawn was eager to brand her company name and share her passion of biscotti with everyone and anyone…from the first customer – The Bean Sprout Café in Halifax, to becoming a member of The Halifax Chamber of Commerce, BConnected, AllTrade Canada and an active member of The Centre for Women in Business where she also sits on their advisory board she is excited to what Nova Scotia can offer for entrepreneurs and small business. Dawn looks forward to the continued growth of her company with a goal of becoming Biscotti of Choice in the Maritimes.
The next step in this exciting adventure is becoming a Charter Member with Nova Scotia Come to life and sharing with Canada what Nova Scotia has done for her business. Nova Scotia is a place that holds the opportunity for those who want the challenge. Dawn says moving to Nova Scotia has allowed her the time with her young growing family, the flexibility to be there for them and at the same time, fulfill her dream of her own business.
A little more about The Naughty Cookie Co. We specialize in Artisan Gourmet Biscotti - Biscotti, meaning “twice baked”, is originally an Italian cookie that is hard and crispy and is traditionally dunked in wine, coffee etc. Being baked twice made these cookies very easy to store for extended periods of time and therefore was historically used by soldiers and explorers.
The Naughty Cookie Co. has put a different spin on these traditional cookies…in creating her own recipes she has created a “Dunking Optional Biscotti” that tastes delectable without soaking up other flavours. Using recipes she has been perfecting since 2001, Dawn Emson, cookie creator, is making them now for you to try…
Over the past 9 years, Dawn has created over 44 unique, working recipes for artisan gourmet biscotti. Since the debut in 2008, she has launched more than 16 flavours and is currently distributing them to various cafes, restaurants and retail outlets in the Halifax area. Dawn was honoured in the 2007/08 MSVU Annual President’s Report as well as chosen as a semi-finalist for the Grow award in the Watch Me Grow Conference through CWB.
Dawn says she loves what she does and has enough passion in it to want to share it with others. This is a very exciting time in business for women, and Dawn believes, we can learn and grow together in business and strive to have the balance of family and career. We can bake our cookies and eat them too.
