Harmonic Internet Development
Taking pride. Embracing challenges. Seizing opportunities. These are attributes shared by many successful Atlantic Canadians, and Harmonic Internet Development owner Andrew Milne is no exception.
Born in St. John’s Newfoundland, Andrew’s family moved to “the mainland” when he was just four years old, and he has called Nova Scotia home ever since. In fact, he wouldn't have it any other way.
“I never wanted to stray far from my roots in Nova Scotia. Even when most of my classmates were itching to get the coveted technology co-op positions in Ottawa and Toronto, I was quite content to take positions here in Nova Scotia. I simply loved it here too much to ever consider leaving."
After attending the College of Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, and then completing a Bachelor of Computer Science degree at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Andrew worked with SolutionInc Ltd. for eight years, where he produced commercial-enterprise software in the role of senior developer and technical project manager.
In 2007, Andrew ventured into Internet marketing, joining Halifax-based Modern Media as Senior Web Technologies Developer. He quickly progressed into the role of Director of Technology, in which he led the technical development of several key projects, including new features for Empire Theatres, redevelopment of the Nova Scotia Come To Life website and the new Lawtons Drugs website. As well, he streamlined the development process by implementing numerous policies and procedures.
Two years later, opportunity came knocking. “I’ve always wanted to start my own business, and suddenly the opportunity presented itself. Thanks to the experience I had gained to this point, I felt very confident taking the leap of faith."
Harmonic Internet Development officially opened for business in February 2010, and Andrew immediately started work on a website for a Nova Scotia tourism-based organization. Providing a full suite of Internet marketing services, including web design and development, search engine optimization (SEO), social media, analytics and general consulting, the company has enjoyed terrific success with a wide variety of local clients, including Acadia University, Nautel Ltd, Headspace Design and Media Mechanics Inc.
Harmonic has brought its expertise outside the region as well. In addition to ongoing web projects through a firm based in Melbourne, Australia, the company has also worked for clients across Canada, including a pre-school in Toronto for which Harmonic recently completed a new website.
A big focus of the company is on assisting smaller Nova Scotia based community organizations and charities with Internet marketing. “We understand smaller non-profit organizations don’t always have the monetary or human resources to really provide that extra level of service to their clients — which a strong Internet presence can provide. We try to help by offering discounted rates and very low-cost website solutions for community events and fundraisers. My family and I love living in Nova Scotia, and this is just one small way we can give back as a company.”
Andrew and his family live in the community of Fall River, and travel frequently throughout the province. “We often take day trips with the kids to various areas of the province – there is just so much to see and explore, and you can’t beat the scenery and hospitality. I can’t imagine raising our children, or running a small business, anywhere else.”
