Hidden Gems - The Journey Begins
As many of you know, Nova Scotia Come to life launched a contest to uncover some hidden gems in Nova Scotia. You responded and thanks so much to those of you who sent us suggestions.
Mark Lassman-Eul has arrived in Nova Scotia to visit his dear friend Kevin Little. Kevin is a Minister at St. Luke’s United Church in Tantallon and is very active in his community. The last time Mark was here, Kevin took him to visit 32 locations in Nova Scotia. All of them were suggested by Nova Scotians. Kevin asked for submissions in a column in the Chronicle Herald.
This time around, you answered the call, making several wonderful suggestions. Here are Mark’s picks and stay tuned for Mark’s stories as he experiences these places first hand. For those of you who see your suggestions in the top 5 - we'll be in touch with your prize!
Mark's first destination is Deadman’s Island, a small peninsula, located in the Northwest Arm of Halifax Harbour. You’ll find a park and a cemetery there. The park was established in 2005 by the City of Halifax. The British military housed prisoners of war there in the 1800’s and more than 100 American servicemen died on this island and are buried in un-marked graves. You’ll find a large plaque on site – dedicated to those men.
Dawson Falls is another stop on the Mark Lassman-Eul tour. The Falls are located off the 101 highway near Ellerhouse. You must walk down an old logging road until you see the bridge across Dawson Brook – we’re told you’ll hear the waterfall.
Stop three is Moses Mountain. This hiking trail can be found in Mill Section, about 13 kilometres from Windsor on Route 14 between Windsor and Chester.
Mark’s next stop will take him to Hubbards and along the Aspotogan Coast Drive. We’re told by our submitter that this is the best place in Nova Scotia.
Mark will wrap up his adventure with a trip to Lawrencetown Beach. One of our entrants said this beach is a piece of heaven, “with something for everyone, you can surf or watch the surfers, hike, or just enjoy the ocean mist and watch the sun set. Sounds like heaven to me.
I’ve learned so much about our province through this contest and I thank Kevin and Mark for opening my eyes to the beauty around me. Let’s make a pledge to explore a little more and discover our many hidden gems.
