Tree for Boston

In 1918, Halifax sent a Christmas tree to the City of Boston to thank them for their kindness. That gift was revived in 1971 and continues today.

The 2012 tree is a 57 foot white spruce, donated by the Hick's family in Jordan Bay, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.

It is approximately 70 years old. The tree will be cut down in a special ceremony at the Hick's home, 14 Lake Road on November 13 at 10:30am. The public is more than welcome to attend.Read more

Thrive! Plan for a Healthier Nova Scotia

The province is addressing childhood obesity and preventable chronic disease with a plan that focuses on healthy eating and physical activity.

Premier Darrell Dexter and Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson released Thrive: a plan for a healthier Nova Scotia on June 7. The government-wide effort has 34 main points and $2.045-million in new funding for 2012-13.Read more

Province Invests in Shipbuilding

Nova Scotia committed up to $304 million in loans as part of Irving Shipbuilding's successful bid for the $25 billion federal combat vessel shipbuilding program, Premier Darrell Dexter revealed March 30.

It is the single largest investment in jobs and growing the economy in Nova Scotia's history - to strengthen the competitiveness of Irving Shipbuilding's bid to build Canada's next fleet of combat ships. It represents six per cent of the tax revenue the province expects to receive in return.Read more

Training Investment for Mi'kmaq

Mi'kmaq in Cape Breton and eastern Nova Scotia will soon have access to skills and job-readiness training to prepare for the good jobs opening up across the province.

Premier Darrell Dexter was in Membertou First Nation March 5 to announce $640,000 over two years for the Unama'ki Economic Benefits Office. The investment will fund programs that will help ensure people are ready to fill good jobs in industries seeking workers.Read more

Celebrating Our Unsung Heroes

Nova Scotia's 28th annual African Heritage Month celebrated throughout the month of February will pay tribute to Unsung Heroes: Men who Make a Difference.

"In 2010 we celebrated our Leading Ladies, Lasting Legacies, and in 2012 we are following suit by recognizing men who have a positive impact on their neighbourhoods," said African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Percy Paris at a recent proclamation ceremony.Read more

Happy Holidays Boston!

A Nova Scotia evergreen was the centrepiece of a televised event in Boston Dec. 1 as an annual tradition of giving between Nova Scotia and Boston celebrates 40 years.

Every year since 1971, Nova Scotia sends a Christmas tree to the people of Boston in recognition of the help provided following the Halifax Explosion on Dec. 6, 1917.

This year's tree is a 45-foot white spruce from Ken and Donna Spinney of Central Argyle, Yarmouth Co.Read more

O Boston Tree

A 14-meter, 48-year-old white spruce from Central Argyle in Yarmouth County has been delivered to Boston. Donated by Ken and Donna Spinney, the tree is Nova Scotia's gift to Boston, continuing an annual tradition.

"The people of Boston reached out to us during a dark time in our province's history and this beautiful Nova Scotia Christmas tree expresses our deep thanks, once again, for neighbourly help that will never be forgotten," said Charlie Parker, Minister of Natural Resources. "I thank the Spinney family for generously providing this year's tree."Read more

Canada's Shipbuilder

Nova Scotia has been selected to build Canada's next fleet of combat ships.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. has been chosen to negotiate the right to build Canada's new combat vessel fleet, as part of the federal government's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy. The decision was announced Oct. 19, in Ottawa.

"Congratulations to Irving Shipbuilding and all of its employees for proving that Nova Scotia is ready to build the best ships," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "This is a defining moment in Nova Scotia's history. The future starts here."Read more

IncrEDIBLE Picnics!

It's that time of year again! One of Nova Scotia’s annual local food celebrations kicked off August 7 in Harmony Park in Summerville, Hants shore with the first of 12 Incredible Picnics taking place across the province, organized by Select Nova Scotia.

Canadian Ships Start Here

Nova Scotia is working with a number of partners to seize what could be the biggest opportunity for Nova Scotia since confederation.

In response to the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is preparing a bid that could represent up to 30 billion dollars in military supply spending over 30 years.

Winning this bid would equate to hosting the Olympics each year for 30 years. It would be a win for Nova Scotia, and a win for Canada.Read more
